Can you believe we are already past the first week of January? Did you make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight this year? I actually committed to the process of shedding my extra pounds Christmas Day. So far, I have lost 13 lbs! Today, however, I want to talk about shedding not your physical weight, but your burdens, disappointments, grudges, or whatever else you are carrying around that is spiritually weighing you down. Jesus stated this:
Jesus offers to trade us our burdens for what He has to give us, a lighter and easier yoke to bear. If you really want to shed some pounds this year, give Him your troubles and allow Him to lighten your load. Jesus did so much for us to give us this opportunity to live free. Soak in this passage from Isaiah:
My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground.
There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him.
He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. Isaiah 53:2-6
What a Savior we have in Jesus that while we are constantly turning and straying away, He has already bore the weight of our sins! What weight is holding you back?
1. Is it the weight of pride? For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 1 John 2:16
2. Is it the weight of greed or selfishness? Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Luke 12:15
3. Is it the weight of shame? Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 1 Corinthians 1:27
4. Is it the weight of unforgiveness? But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:15
Allow Jesus to work within you and help you release that excess baggage once and for all. Don’t carry around a heavy spirit, but reach for the plans God has for you by letting go of the past. This year, turn a corner, make a move, and watch what He will do.
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. Ephesians 1:7
