Last Friday I renewed my nurse practitioner certification by exam. Certification last five years, and so, it had been a while since I had to take it. Needless to say, I was a little nervous. Renewing that certification reminded me how we should all renew our commitment to a life with Christ –daily.
You may say renewing your life daily seems excessive, but in light of the fact that we sin almost hourly, a daily renewal seems appropriate, don’t you think? The Bible states in Romans:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV
And in Proverbs:
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23 NIV
I don’t know about you, but my mind and my heart can certainly wander from moment to moment. So keeping them in check is a full-time job. And because we all struggle in these areas, God is prepared:
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT
He is committed:
Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. Hebrews 6:16-18 NLT
He is patient:
But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3:8-9 NLT
These are just a few of His characteristics –and that gives me hope that even when I falter, I can try again (recommitment) myself to the task of following Christ.
Daily renewal is part of the process. Daily renewal keeps us on the straight and narrow. Daily renewal is biblical. Today, renew your walk with Christ. Don’t put it off for long periods of time so you feel unsure, out of sorts, and are tempted to ‘cram’ a bunch of “I’m sorry, I’ll do better” statements into this special moment. Brush that stuff off daily so that each renewal is exciting and bolder than the last. Then the task becomes manageable instead of overwhelming, it becomes joyful instead of dreadful, and it becomes second nature not forced.
You can do it! All it takes is getting started!! Blessings!
