Home Run Series: Who’s On First?

This week, get ready! Life is standing on the pitcher’s mound waiting to throw the ball, and it’s time to make a play that leads toward first base. First base represents our inner self and the work we need to do to get ourselves in line with God’s will for our lives.

Proverbs 16:2 states:

I know for me; on any given day, I have to fight what I think is right for me versus what God says is right for me. That inner struggle builds character. Will I do what needs to be done to stay close to God or will I do what I feel like instead?

The biggest pressure in a baseball game is in the bottom of the ninth inning, when the bases are loaded and there are two outs. Scoring a run can be the difference between winning and losing the game. Does life feel that way most days? Are your bases loaded? Perhaps you have a relationship or marriage on first, kids on second, and your job on third. Or maybe your bases are loaded a little different, but no matter how life stacks up for you–God’s will must be in it, in order for you to have the character you need to be a top scorer. When the pressure is on, whatever is inside you will come out! You can count on it.

When that moment comes, will it be self-control, grace, mercy, and compassion that you display or will it be arrogance, selfishness, or jealousy?

God wants to work on us from the inside out, but we have to be willing to stand in the moment. Are we willing to let Him make the call on which play will be next? Are we willing to swing the bat with all that is within us for His honor and glory? Or will we simply try to bunt the ball on our own and see how far we get?

God doesn’t promise this character- building stuff will be easy. Sometimes we will strike out, but if we let God work in us and through us, we will soon be on our way around first base and going to second.

However, our biggest obstacle to first base is pride:

Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Romans 12:3 NLT

So, humble yourself to the ultimate coach, and let Him steer you to first base and beyond! Let’s play ball!

Can You Walk the Christian Walk?

Recently, I did a speaking engagement in which I spoke on the Christian walk. Please hear me, it was meant for all –both you and I. The main premise of the discussion was what occurs on the Christian walk (e.g., family tragedy, job loss, financial problems, addictions) can sometimes have folks wondering, “Does Christianity really work?” Within the topic introduction, I attempted to lay out the crossroads that Christians will reach –resist and turn back or continue on with Jesus.

Here is a little excerpt from that speech:

… let me state the first truth about Christians in general. No matter how long you have been a Christian, you can remain in the very early stages of your faith for a long time, can you not? What I mean by that is we initially have high expectations for dramatic life change. We have mustered up enough courage to let go of our past sins and have experienced the taste of freedom that comes from being saved. But then we realize, we have no earthly idea what we just walked into or what exactly to do next.

The second truth –At that point, one of two things will happen to a majority of us:

1. Some of us will blossom for a while. We’ll dig into our church and our faith, and life is relatively good. We’ll say to ourselves: “This Jesus thing isn’t so hard. I’ve got this.” Then life turns on us, and we stand shell-shocked that our new-found fortune has come to a screeching halt.

Are You Joyful Today?

Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth!
Worship the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing with joy.
Acknowledge that the Lord is God!
He made us, and we are his.
We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
go into his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good.
His unfailing love continues forever,
and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

Psalm 100

So the past few weeks have been incredibly busy, stressful, and just plan overwhelming! I know we all have days like that, but when they pile on all at once, it is crazy! You can just get defeated!

This past week, I decided to get some help! I needed intercession, and I went for it! I am blessed to have some awesome friends who were willing to pray with me this past week. Praying to God can take the weight off your shoulders, but praying to God with friends can lift you off the ground.

Goodness Graced Us

Goodness -How do you define it? When looking up the word goodness in most dictionaries these synonyms are listed: integrity, honesty, uprightness, virtue, and my personal favorite -moral excellence. And evil, yes, there are synonyms for this too, but let’s just call it by its real name -sin.

Daily, I struggle against the sin within me to achieve some level of goodness. However, apart from God, it is an impossible task. My human nature is weak, but He is strong. Let’s use God’s litmus test for judging if we are good or sinful.

The Ten Commandments:

1. “You shall have no other gods before me.”

2. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”

3. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”

4. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.”

5. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

6. “You shall not murder.”

7. “You shall not commit adultery.”

8. “You shall not steal.”

9. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”

10. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:3-17 NIV

Who to Love

One of my favorite scriptures is 1 John 4:19:  We love each other because he loved us first. On the surface, this is an easily repeated text.

In truth, when the subject of loving others is studied more closely, often people ask, “Who are we really responsible to love?” In our humanity, we want to love others, but find ourselves picking and choosing based on our own emotions. We secretly harbor a scale of expectation that people need to live up to or else they become ‘unlovable.’ However, Jesus calls us to love with abandon. Biblical instruction on love and who to love encompasses the following:

1 God.  In Matthew 22, when asked which law under Moses was the greatest, Jesus answered: “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment…. (verse 37-38).

2. Your neighbor. Continuing in Matthew 22, Jesus adds: “A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (verse 39).
